Sports and Life in 2009 (what a year)

Black Star Sports Network

So the end of the time period known as 2009 came and went and I am just getting back to this blog :-)

Things in the sports world on the field have been exciting, suprising in some cases and always entertaining. Problem is I find it hard to recall it all in the midst of life, work, school and the large variety of entertainment I take part in (clubs, concerts, flag football with friends among other activities) or observe (hoops from high school to the nba to fiba, american football (college & nfl, good thing I can not get canadian football and I will pass on australian football), football (aka soccer), baseball (primarily mlb though I have watched japanese baseball online), no rugby viewing for me though I have a rugby ps2 game, and I also like boxing and mixed martial arts, why choose one when you can watch both?, I think you get the point and you can see why my memory is cloudy with factoids and results of so many sorts. Nonetheless, I will highlight huge events which come to mind.

College Football: The Florida Tebows, I mean Gators beat the Oklahoma Sooners (both QBs returned to college, now we wonder if Tebow who had a good year can QB in the NFL...I think he will become a FB in the 'new' Wildcat formation (how timely for Tebow, I would say :-). OU's QB Bradford on the other hand had the misfortune of getting injured early in the FBS football season. In both cases, no point was made by returning to college. Although I support education as a history professor and academic in-training yet I think they both should have gone to the NFL. Believe me, education helps but money matters in this nation!

NFL: The Steelers did it in the last moments which is why coaches say they their teams must pay a full 60 minutes. Although the state did not initially celebrate Martin Luther King's Birthday, I put that aside to support the former grocery store stock clerk, dreadlocked RB and plethora of talented receivers to no avail! It was a great game though. So far this season, the Colts are still undefeated and the Saints lost their first game this weekend, yes the "Ain'ts" are by my measure the best team this year, and the lost may be better for them ask the 2008 Patriots!

College Hoops: Time will tell who will survive the NCAA tourney but Kentucky continues to look good and Kansas looks hard to beat. Outside of those two teams I can only see Villanova winning because of Scottie Reynolds whose 'hard-nosed' Senior play I like...

This Summer, Black Star Sports will be up and running with periodic sports information of note...think Outside the Lines yet with more of an international vibe and hopefully insightful 'journalistic' content... www.blackstarsports.com

The Joy of Channelsurfing.net

Black Star Sports Network

As I sit here watching
[Nippon (Japan) Professional Baseball] NPL - Yokohama BayStars vs Yomiuri Giants 5:00AM EST 5/13 at a little after 4am Pacific Standard Time, it is clear that we are in a global age. Currently 6-6 in the 6th ending, one man at firstbase for the BayStars....Ishikawa at bat, he missed his first bunt atttempt. Ground out. Runner advances to second. #2 gets a hit and puts them ahead 7-6 with am in field single, then #25 gets single to get another run, now the score is 8-6. Next player grounds out and then commercials...but what was interesting was the MLB Today update. The update started with a 'highlight' of a ground out by outfielder Hideki Matsui's of the Yankees, then a hit by outfielder Fosume Kosuke Fukudome of the Chicago Cubs, the Mariners Ichiro's [Suzuki] (one of me and my brother's favorite players) hits and ended with fellow Mariner Kenji Johjima getting a hit.

Besides my Vin Scully-level play by play prose, what's quite interesting is the level of crowd 'animation' and celebration during the games (matchs). There is a high-degree of passion for their favorite teams. Try it one day you my like.
